Wagner Ring Solti

Wagner The Ring Cycle Opera North. The Grand Finale The thrilling conclusion of Wagners Ringcontains a whole host of moments iconic in the opera world and beyond heres just five of them. The deed which redeems the world In Gtterdmmerung, the Ringcycle reaches its overwhelming conclusion. The title itself is a German translation of the Old Norse word Ragnark, which refers to a prophesied war that ultimately results in the burning, immersion in water, and renewal of the world. At the start of this final instalment, Wotan, resigned and now waiting inside Valhalla for the end, has left his united grandson Siegfried and ex valkyrie daughter Brnnhilde with the task of working the deed which redeems the world. However, the forces of evil are still alive and kicking, and the malevolent meddling of Alberichs son Hagen, desperate to get his own hands on the all powerful ring, results in bitter betrayal for Siegfried and Brnnhilde, leaving our heroine alone to make the ultimate sacrifice and bring to fruition the long awaited Twilight of the Gods2. Horsing around. Brnnhildes horse Grane first referenced in Die Walkre, poses challenges for most stagings of the Ring. Particularly awkward is the climax to Gtterdmmerung, as Brnnhilde is required to ride her horse into the flames of a funeral pyre. Usually, directors consider that discretion is the better part of valour, and Brnnhilde addresses her comments to an offstage Grane i. Some productions have used a mock horse, but this can have an unwanted comical effect just as the piece approaches its emotional climax. Occasionally, an actual horse is cast, and though more successful nowadays, in the early 2. The four operas of Richard Wagners cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen together take about 15 hours, which makes for several records, tapes, or CDs, and a lot of studio time. Orchestral showcases. Phoenix Game Installer Software more. Gtterdmmerung contains two huge orchestral showcases that are often extracted and performed as stand alone pieces outside the opera house. The first is known as Siegfrieds Rhein Journey. This seven minute extract links the prologue of Gtterdmmerung, in which Brnnhilde and Siegfried wish each other an ecstatic goodbye, to Act I, which is set in the hall of the Gibichungs, and depicts Siegfried galloping off in search of new adventure on Grane on loan from his new wife Brnnhilde. Wagner paints the rhythm of the galloping horse into the music in almost cinematic style  we can see and feel the scenery flashing by as our hero charges off into the distance. The other huge orchestral showcase is known as Siegfrieds Funeral March, and is one of the most famous extracts in the whole Ring. Played during Act III as Siegfrieds dead body is carried away, this solemn march is epic, heroic, and most importantly, recalls many of the motifs associated with Siegfried and the Wlsungs, drawing the past together in one climactic snapshot, as if everything has led to this moment. Listen to the march here played in a recording session of the famous Golden Ring by the Vienna Philharmonic under Georg Solti. Steerhorns. To add to Wagners enormous orchestra, Gtterdmmerung features three steerhorns. The steerhorn is a long bugle horn with a straight tube, and was originally used during the medieval period as a battle instrument, and was carved from a literal cows horn With no moving parts or valves, the steerhorn sounds just one note, and its use in an orchestral context is unique to Wagners work. The steerhorns are heard during Act II, when Hagen summons the Gibichung vassals sung by the chorus in their one and only appearance in the Ring cycle to welcome Gunther and his bride by sounding the war alarm. The sound produced is otherworldly and stands out from the general orchestral texture as something primal and primitive, evoking a sense of the Gibichungs tribal heritage.
